To celebrate the end of the year, the UWM Hi-Lo Doubles Tournament is annually held on Study Day (the Friday after the last day of classes) of the Spring semester. This year, nine current and former UWM handball students competed along with three coaches. Tournament director Mark Keane formed the teams so the skill level was as equal as possible amongst all six teams. Every team played one game to 15 in a round robin against each other team.
This proved to be the most competitive Hi-Lo tournament in the over 10 year history of the tournament! Almost every game had both teams scoring at least double digits. After a tiring first four rounds of the tournament, there were still three teams in the running for the title going into the final round: Mark Keane & David Jensen, Toby Deutsch & Joe Frisch, and Jose Munguia & Ian Frisch.
In a must-win matchup, Mark & David faced off against Ben Van Arsdale & Cheng Yu Yeh in the final round. It proved to be a difficult assignment as Cheng Yu, with only several months of handball experience, improved significantly throughout the tournament and played a great game to beat Mark & David eliminating them from title contention.
That left Toby & Joe against Jose & Ian as the winner take all title match. Not only was this a match for the championship, but also family bragging rights as Joe and Ian are brothers! The game was neck and neck the whole time with the intensity upping after every point scored. Despite a really solid effort by Joe and Toby, Jose and Ian were too much and took the championship match 15-13.
